The trade relations of Thera through the ceramic findings from the tombs of Sellada and the sanctuary of Aphrodite
Summary:
This research deals with the imported and domestic pottery of the Geometric and the Archaic times, as it is represented by the findings of a very important cemetery of the Cycladic area, that of Sellada of Thera, as well as the Sanctuary of Aphrodite in the same island. The pottery in Thera represents various stages of development - either artistic or iconographic - and thus enable us to form an overall picture of the relations that the island had developed with the major trading centers of that time. In addition, before the analysis of the various pottery workshops, the types of tombs and the burial customs of the cemetery of Sellada are briefly presented. After completing the presentation of Sellada, it follows the sanctuary of Aphrodite, where in parallel with the analysis of the findings-offerings to the goddess, an attempt is made to identify the nature of the Aphrodite of Thera.
