Analysis of ERA 5 data from 1981-2020 for the spatial and temporal estimation of trends in climate extremes.
Summary:
The effects of climate change on cities are making conditions more and more unfavorable for the inhabitants of urban centers. Climatic parameters such as temperature, but also climatic phenomena such as heat waves tend to increase in their extreme values or in their duration. The above affect the quality of life and health of citizens in the long term, making the study of the thermal environment in cities particularly important.

This thesis examines the thermal environment in 10 cities of Greece using temperature data in combination with advanced statistical tools. Nine climate indicators are calculated based on both minimum and maximum temperature, and their trends are calculated for a 40-year period, from 1981 to 2020. Regarding the forecast of the maximum daily temperature, historical data were used and according to the extreme value analysis, estimates are given for the return levels of maximum temperatures over the next 100 years. The results of the statistical analysis are discussed in terms of each climate index and city. Finally, the cities are ranked according to their sensitivity in climate variability, following a methodology that highlights the cities that are more prone to thermal risk
