Ghrelin effect on the feeling of hunger and on body weight among people with Diabetes Mellitus type 2
Summary:
Diabetes Mellitus type 2, constitutes a critical problem of public health and it is an overall threat for societies and health systems. It is a metabolic disorder with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Unless it is prevented and treated appropriately, it causes severe complications in all body systems. Diabetes Mellitus type 2 is promptly related to obesity, which provokes insulin resistance. Healthy body weight achievement and maintenance, as well as obesity prevention is a major intervention for preventing and encountering with Diabetes Mellitus type 2.
Energy homeostasis and body weight regulation is based on keeping balance between energy intake and energy expenses (energy balance). Brain adjusts energy homeostasis, as a response to the signals which are transferred by the peripheral peptides, due to the stimulation from the sense organs and the psychological sphere. Ghrelin is a peptide, the only widely known appetite hormone, which is produced in the peripheral zone and acts centrally.
This Thesis is a review of the recent scientific articles and includes reference to the Ghrelin effect on the feeling of hunger and on body weight, among people with Diabetes Mellitus type 2. It encompasses an attempt to implement the metabolic pathways of Ghrelin for the development of new treatments on Diabetes Mellitus type 2.
