The enjambments of Philyras and Seferis
Summary:
The present thesis deals with enjambment studied in the poems of Romos Philyras and George Seferis and aims to describe its general characteristics as well as to comment on the specific qualities that it acquires in this corpus. The purpose is to highlight the importance of enjambment, that has been ignored for many years both in the work of the two poets and in poetry in general.
A variety of views by different scholars on the subject along with the theoretical background are presented in the first part of the thesis, followed by the study of enjambment mostly in the work of the two poets whose work has now appeared in new editions. The most characteristic examples of enjambment in their work are analyzed in the thesis while the remaining ones are recorded and presented in the annex. Other examples of enjambment in the poetry of Philyras and Seferis contemporaries are also analyzed in an effort to study the phenomenon through the work of more poets of the Interwar period.
There are three chapters: in the first the theory is presented, in the second the enjambments of Philyras and Seferis are studied and the third contains comments on the enjambments of their contemporary poets. An annex with table follows recording the enjambments of the poets under study verse with tables linked to the relevant graphs. More verses from the work of other Interwar period poets are presented in the second part of the addendum.
