Popular culture in the textbooks of teaching Modern Greek as a Second/Foreign Language. A critical overview.

This dissertation aims at investigating the use and contribution of elements of popular culture contained in contemporary textbooks used to teach the modern Greek language. It also deals with the identification, description and interpretation of these elements have indexed all the material relating to popular culture contained in 27 textbooks aimed at adults and 4 aimed at children learning Greek. These textbooks are used by instructors of modern Greek language in the diaspora and for the education of refugees living in Greece, both in formal and in non-formal educational contexts. The material has been classified on the basis of different topics and aspects of popular culture and more specifically according to the different kinds of oral literature, the landmarks of the life cycle, the different aspects and elements of traditional material and social life, Greek people’s beliefs and practices relating to natural and metaphysical phenomena, the customs of the annual cycle and various topics of modern folklore.
