Hydrogeological Model of North and Eastern Attica Basins
Summary:
The purpose of the present study is the construction of complete hydrogeological model in the wider area covered by the municipalities of Marathon, Dionisos, and the eastern part of Oropos, in north-eastern Attica. The use of modeling in the forthcoming study aims to assist in the following directions: i) investigation of the hydraulic interconnections between the geological formations of the area, ii) hydraulic interconnections between formations that are sources of pollutants and the water masses where they end up.
The final objectives of this study are i) a 3D model of the geology and tectonic structure of the study area, ii) a 3D model of the aquifers and their recharge area, iii) Determination of aquifers geometry and interconnections, iv) Modeling of groundwater drainage and groundwater routes.
The study area consists mainly of the non-metamorphic formations of the Sub-Pelagonian Unit and the metamorphic rocks of Attic-Cycladic massif with the intercalated units of Agios Giorgios and Afidnes in between and a significant neotectonic overprint with significant thickness of Post Alpine deposits.
The carbonate platforms of the Triassic-Liassic limestones and marbles due to their thickness and fractured mass are capable of developing karstic forms with the ability to contain and transfer water. Moreover, the Neogene lacustrine formations are capable of hosting big amounts of water due to their significant extent and thickness. Five aquifers were mapped in the area and their boundaries were demarcated, the porous aquifer of Neogene and the karstic NE Parnitha, Grammatiko, Marathon basin, and Agia Marina aquifers which they combine at two groundwater systems.
