Natural Hazards and Risk Assessment at Archeological Sites Of Rhodes Greece
Summary:
The integrity and timelessness of cultural heritage, which remained intact throughout the centuries and was kept to this day, is threatened by geodynamic and severe weather phenomena, often as result of climate change. Similarly, the numerous visitors who flock to these sites, as well as the people who work there are equally threatened.
The consequences are immediate, serious and many times irreversible, because monuments are unique, valuable and, if destroyed, there is no possibility of them being replaced.
The present dissertation discusses, the natural hazards and risk assessment at the archaeological sites of Rhodes, Greece.
The first chapter refers to cultural heritage and natural hazards, specifically to the protection of cultural heritage on a global level, the international and national institutional framework, examples of good practices and the natural hazards at the archaeological sites of Greece.
The second chapter discusses the natural hazards at island of Rhodes (geodynamic phenomena, floods, fires etc.).
The third chapter attempts the study of the archaeological sites of Lindos Acropolis, Ancient Kamiros, Monolithos Castle, Rhodes Acropolis (Monte Smith) and Filerimos. This chapter references the data and methodology (historical record, identification of hazards, analysis of hazards and vulnerability, risk assessment) as well as the processing of data with the results for each site individually.
The fourth and last chapter presents the overall conclusion, the comparative assessment and the suggestions for risk alleviation and business planning.
