Outcome of the health status of patients hospitalized in an intensive care unit with covid-19
Summary:
Introduction: In March 2020, the World Health Organization due to the rapid spread of the coronavirus (SARS-COV-2) declared a global pandemic. Several patients had to be hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit with acute respiratory problems.

Purpose: The purpose of this research was to assess the health outcome of patients hospitalized in ICU with Covid-19.

Material-Method: This is a retrospective observational study, the population of which consisted of 223 patients with Covid-19 who were hospitalized in the ICU of the General Hospital of Lamia, with an average age of 63 years. A specially designed anonymous questionnaire was used to collect the data. The data are presented with their mean value (M) and standard deviation (SD). The categorical data are presented as frequencies (N) and percentages by percent %.

Results: From 21/04/2020 to 31/12/2021, a total of 223 patients were hospitalized, with an average age of 63.72 years (TA = 13,397), 63.7% (N=148/223) were men and 33.6% (N=75/223) women. The range of these ages was 22 to 91 years. The main symptoms were dyspnea (47%), fever (56%) and cough (30%). The total percentage of patients who died within 28 days of the day of their admission to the ICU-Covid was 43.9% (N=98/223) and the rate in the 60-day period was equal to 52.9% (N=118/223). The average stay in the ICU of the 223 patients was 13 days and ranged from 1-28 days. Also, the duration of onset of symptoms until intubation was 9 days.
Conclusions: The main characteristics directly related to mortality were: Patients who had severe ARDS at the time of their admission, low value in the PaO2/FiO2 ratio on the third day of hospitalization, Age (>61years), the average time in mechanical ventilation, the administration of neuromuscular drugs during intubation, increased value in laboratory findings (ferritin, creatinine, white blood cells,) when admitted to the ICU.
