Examining family functioning in a clinical sample
Summary:
Each family develops its own social system consisting of a combination of biological, emotional, cultural, legal, geographical and historical bond types. When a person who is part of a family system experiences a psychological symptom, it may be related to the functioning of the family, while at the same time affecting the family. The present study is an attempt to investigate family functioning in a clinical sample in Greece using the Family Assessment Device (FAD) questionnaire. The aim of the study is to highlight the psychometric properties of this tool. In a clinical sample of 736 individuals corresponding to 185 families, family dysfunction was assessed, as reflected in their high mean scores of the seven dimensions of the questionnaire (Problem Solving, Communication, Affective Responsiveness, Behavioral Control, Roles, Affective Involvement and General Functioning). For the reliability of the tool, the main statistical analyses that were applied were confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), Chronbach's alpha reliability test and principal component analysis (PCA). The results of the present study confirm that the FAD is a tool suitable for evaluating family functioning at a clinical level.
