Group B Streptococcus: Prevalence and risk factors in pregnant women in Athens
Summary:
Group B streptococcus (GBS) or Streptococcus agalactiae is a major cause of invasive disease in neonates, young infants and pregnant women. The most important risk factor is colonization of pregnant women with GBS. The aim of the present study was to estimate the prevalence GBS colonization in pregnant women in our area, examine the rate of resistance to antibiotics and also the possible association of colonization with risk factors. 490 vaginal and rectal specimens were collected from pregnant women and cultured. The GBS colonization rate was 8%. All strains were susceptible to penicillin, while susceptibility to erythromycin and clindamycin was 77% and 79.5%, respectively. A total of 17 isolated GBS strains were molecularly typed to sequence types (STs). Five of GBS strains were identified as ST1, three as ST23, three as ST19, three ST8 and one as ST17. All STs mentioned above are reported in the literature as the most frequent in maternal colonization and neonatal GBS disease.
