Mass Extinctions in Geological Time through the Ammonite Collection of Kotsiomytis Museum (Lygourio) and Theatre
Summary:
Our planet nowadays is facing the climate change which can potentially lead to the complete extinction of life according to the scientists. An important tool for studying life processes on Earth are the fossils. The current thesis took advantage of the theme collection of ammonites from the Argolida region which is hosted in Kotsiomytis museum and is part of greek geological heritage. The ammonites’ collection was incorporated in a new educational programme that aims to inform and raise awareness among students as well as the wider audience about life processes through geological time and the impact of human activities on Earth. The programme has used innovative pedagogical methods such as educational drama, inquiry based learning and augmented reality. The programme was implementated to a total of sixtyfour fourteen-year-old students in relation to environmental education activities that take place in their schools. The current essay aims to become a triggering start of developing activities regarding geoscience literacy for all citizens in order to face natural phenomena without fear and to protect the environment they live in.
