Psychosocial consequences of COVID -19 in children and adolescents with emphasis on anxiety disorders: A systematic review
Summary:
Since December 2019 the world is facing the threat of COVID-19 pandemic. This systematic review aim to highlight how the pandemic affected the psychological health of children, adolescents and young adults, especially those who mentioned anxiety symptoms or they were already diagnosed with anxiety disorders. Therefore, studies were searched through databases, such as Google Scholar, SCOPUS, Pubmed, PsychInfo and EMBASE up to date May 8, 2020. From the large sample of the studies (n=2294), only 13 were included, reporting anxiety symptomatology. Huge changes in peoples’ everyday lives were noted, because of COVID-19. Students and workers mentioned anxiety symptoms, due to restrictions and distance learning and working. Families with children with Special Education Needs and Disabilities faced a completely new reality due to quarantine. In addition, people who had been diagnosed with anxiety disorders reported deterioration of their symptomatology. On the other hand, social media, mass media and technology were called to play an important role during this period. The psychological impact of COVID-19 is a new research field that will grow rapidly in the future.
