Factors associated with perceived stigma in patients with psoriasis in Greece: The Greek version of the Feelings of Stigmatization Questionnaire and the 6-Item of Stigmatization Scale
Summary:
The present study examines the phenomenon of perceived stigmatization in patients with psoriasis in Greece and the identification of factors associated with this phenomenon. The main objective is to test the psychometric properties of the Feelings of Stigmatization Questionnaire and the 6-Item Stigmatization Scale. Based on the literature review, it was expected that the questionnaires would have sufficient reliability and validity to be used in a sample of patients with psoriasis in Greece, as well as the identification of factors associated with them. The sample of the study consisted of a total of 140 patients suffering from psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Participants were administered a questionnaire of demographic and medical information, the Dermatology Life Quality Index (Finlay & Khan, 1994), the Feelings of Stigmatization Questionnaire (Ginsburg & Link, 1989), and the 6-Item Stigmatization Scale (Lu et al., 2003). The main results were that the questionnaires were sufficiently reliable and valid to be used in a Greek population. The 6-item Stigmatization Scale retained its original form, while five new subscales were created in the Stigmatization Emotions Questionnaire. In addition, disease severity was found to play the most important role, as it had a high correlation with all variables. Finally, a partial mediation of perceived stigmatization was identified in the relationship between quality of life and disease severity. The findings are discussed with recent Greek and international literature, as well as their practical implications.
