The political song in Greece today
Summary:
Political song is an aspect of Greek socio-political reality that has been of interest to researchers in previous periods. This thesis contributes to further research on political song in today’s Greece, from 2010 to the present. Through primary and secondary qualitative research, the characteristics of contemporary political song in Greece, the ways in which it is promoted and the forms of censorship it suffers are studied. Through interviews with artists of the genre, radio producers, musicologists and lyricists, the usefulness of political song is highlighted and the contemporary socio-political reality is captured from their point of view. According to the results of the research, political song in Greece today, as in earlier times, constitutes a powerful means of expressing collective opinions and the creators of the genre take a mediating role, while their attitude towards the socio-political context plays a decisive role in the public's response. It also shows the particular flourishing of political song today, mainly through the hip-hop scene, in the context of which a number of musical groups and artists have been created over the last two decades. In addition, there has been a very marked reduction of radio and other media as a means of promoting political song and their replacement by digital media such as YouTube and Spotify. Nevertheless, while the way these digital media operate helps the greater dissemination of political song from artists to the public, as they have easier access to them, censorship of political artistic works remains constant and new forms of censorship seem to be emerging, differentiated from the past.
