''Beholding Liberty! At the Hellenic Parliament, two centuries later'' Visual and conceptual depiction of the Greek war of independence of 1821, as an international event
Summary:
The Greek war of independence of 1821 wasn’t just an event of resistance against the Ottoman empire, but mainly a revolutionary act having as goal the foundation of a democratic national government. We are referring to a not linear but dynamic event full of fluctations due to varrinet factors, such as factionalism and the interests of important families, the transition from individual perception to collective consciousness, based on state institutions, the progress from the state of a vassal of the empire to a state citizen, as well as the change of attitude of the Great European Powers towards the Greeks.
In this particular project we will focus on the international impact of the Greek war of Independence, and we also analyze through the description of the exhibition ΄΄Beholding Liberty! At the Hellenic Parliament two centuries later΄΄, its clear relation between the European structure and Ancient Times, as well as the modern unredeemed Greeks. The realization of a common past worked in a connecting way between nations and the internationalization of the Greek War of Independence put pressure on the Governments of the Eyropean countries. The involvement of the Great Powers, in the first movements of the Nation’s contemporary progress played a determining role. The naval battle of Navarino established this relation in a distinctive way.
The narrative aim of the Exhibition, which was organized by the Greek Parliament, demonstrates in a most clear and active way the internationalization of the Greek issue on the one hand in its most critical juncture in history and on the other hand by illuminating the timeless and admirable progress, of the Greece and Europe, a kind of relationship that does not recline, but which on the contrary is reinforced. Art and culture are actively proving to coexist in a uniting educational and reflective manner.
