The relationship of national sovereignty with Search and Rescue (SAR) and its results
Summary:
This MSc thesis presents the issue of Search and Rescue (SAR) by focusing on critical points related to national sovereignty. Its purpose is to show the relationship of national sovereignty with SAR operations. In this context, the study consists of six chapters analyzing the methodology and SAR services from both Greek and Turkish side. The first chapter explains the categories of SAR; the second chapter describes the current national and international legal framework. The third chapter describes the structure of SAR services while an assessment of the geopolitical environment of the Aegean Sea is provided. The foreign policy and challenges of Turkey in the Aegean Sea are analyzed. The fourth chapter describes SAR in Greece and Turkey. Specifically, it describes the SAR area delineation, the services and means of each country, the cases which led to a conflict resulting to both bilateral or international crisis, and procedures of activation of the Joint Rescue Coordinator Center. The fifth chapter presents the conflicting views and aspirations of Greece and Turkey on SAR issues. It presents the new data, challenges and concerns that arise from SAR operations. Finally, in the sixth chapter, the study presents the conclusions from the relationship of national sovereignty with SAR as well as some suggestions are outlined on this issue.
