Migration of Aegean Populations at the End of the Bronze Age and in Early Iron Age
Summary:
The collapse of the palatial systems of the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean, in the early 12th century B.C. is followed by a period of increased human mobility. The phenomenon may be due to the loss of palatial control, the rise of piracy and the famine that affects both the Aegean and Anatolia at the end of the LBA. This paper will focus on those population movements of both Greek-speaking and non-Greek-speaking populations of the so called “Greek Dark Ages” that are archaeologically visible and are mentioned by ancient texts. The paper will focus in movements originated in the greater Aegean area, by covering chronologically the later part of the LBA and the beginning of the EIA. The aim of this paper is to examine these population movements as one single phenomenon, to find out what relates each movement to the others, to seek out the causes of the phenomenon and to point out the effects of this phenomenon to the Aegean and to the Eastern Mediterranean.
