Equilibrating between Ottoman legality and national revolution: Approaches of the role of the supreme Orthodox Clergy during the premier years of the Greek War of Independence
Summary:
The current paper wishes to diversify from the well-trodden path of the stale event
recording and the pompous enumeration of the orthodox hierarch’s feats during the
Greek War of Independence. On the contrary, it suggests a different point of view
for the role of the supreme Orthodox Clergy during the first years of the Greek
military campaign. Through the reexamination of the sources and the critic approach
of the bibliography, this study attempts to examine the institution of the Orthodox
Church as a government mechanism in the state’s service, that is the Ottoman’s and
the under formation Greek’s as well. The will to show the methods of
instrumentalizing the ecclesiastical mechanisms and the leading archpriests during
the effort of promoting the state interests and to point out new concerns about such
an important matter that shows to have fallen in bibliographical obscurity constitute
the main axes of the present essay.
