Compliance of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus to their medication
Summary:
INTRODUCTION: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic systemic disease and non-compliance with treatment affects the outcome of patients leading to more hospitalizations and exacerbations of the disease.
PURPOSE: To determine the compliance of patients with their medication and the correlation with the factors that lead to non-compliance.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 160 consecutive patients with SLE were randomly selected. A questionnaire (MMAS Score) was given to assess patients' compliance with their medication, with a rating of 0-8 (high: 8, moderate: 6-7, low: <6). At the same time, the age, the degree of education, the activity of the disease at the last visit (with SLEDAI), the number of affected organs, the taking of biological agent or intravenous treatment as well as the number of drugs of each patient were recorded. An attempt was made to correlate these factors with patient compliance.
RESULTS: 80% of patients had high (30%) or moderate compliance (50%). Of the patients with moderate or low compliance, 44% stated that one of the reasons they do not take the medication is that they forget about it, while 50% said that they feel uncomfortable taking the medication. Regarding the factors contributing to low compliance (age, level of education, number of organs affected by the disease, biological agent or intravenous therapy, number of drugs administered, SLEDAI), it was found that patients over 50 had better compliance (MMAS> 6 ), while those with better compliance had lower SLEDAI (≤4), with a statistically significant difference (p=0.042).
CONCLUSIONS: The data showed high rates of patient compliance with their medication, highlighting low SLEDAI and age> 50, as factors associated with a statistically significant degree of better compliance.
