The medicalization of intersex bodies
Summary:
In a normative binary gender-based society, the intersex situation/state may be perceived as
dysphoria towards performativity for the individual. Intersex people and bodies are considered to
be trapped in a pathogenic state, which potentially requires intervention. Having as a starting point
the social construction of illness and the femininity/masculinity norm, we will try to analyze the
pathogenesis and medicalization this context created, the medical practices and surgeries
performed, and the narration around it.
The scope of the paper is to examine the relationship between diagnosis and societal norms shaping
a heteronormativity-driven medical practice towards intersex bodies through the authority given
to physicians over the centuries. Furthermore, the present thesis investigates whether projections
and expectations of the guardians/parents and the medical staff undertake the decision on behalf
of intersex individuals regarding their lives and identification.
