Autism spectrum disorder and ADHD in children and adolescents: a systematic review on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic
Summary:
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) reflect two of the major disorders included in the category of neurodevelopmental problems, causing a significant impact on children and adolescent’s mental health, daily life and functioning. Children and adolescents with ADHD or ASD face a variety of challenges in their daily living, the main ones being social adjustment and rule-following. The health rules resulting from the outbreak of pandemic COVID-19 have brought new habits to the fore, such as confinement in the home or the use of a protective mask. In these unprecedented circumstances, this thesis aimed to discover the effects of the pandemic on the mental health, habits, routines and normal functioning of children and adolescents with ADHD or ASD and their families/ caregivers. A systematic review was used as the main methodological tool, identifying studies relevant to the issue. The results showed that both children adolescents with ADHD or ASD, and their family environment, were affected by the new health conditions. In addition, increased anxiety, sleep problems, depression, restlessness, changes inhabits and daily routine were reported. However, the majority of studies noted that these effects did not mitigate these verity of the ADHD or ASD symptoms. In conclusion, this thesis represents the first systematic review on the topic; however, limitations and further suggestions are discussed.
