Practices for prevention of sexually transmitted diseases in extradited persons in Greece
Summary:
Prostitute is by definition a person that engages in sexual activity for payment. Due to the nature of their work they are at high risk of being often exposed to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and should be provided with health surveillance and appropriate interventions.
The medical screening for STDs in this population group is an important activity of the health services the aim to protect and promote their personal health and consequently public health.
In Greece prostitution constitutes a legislated professional activity which is practiced within a defined framework of health obligations and restrictions which requires them to undergo periodic medical pro-screening for STDs.
In order to understand the effectiveness of pre-symptomatic medical checks in these individuals, a literature review was designed and implemented to investigate and evaluate STDs prevention practices that apply to the “for sex” who are active in the Greek territory.
It was found that STDs prevention practices, that these individuals apply in practice, are in the right direction while their effectiveness could be enhanced should they be enriched by educational actions, counseling, interventions and guidelines that improve safe sexual behavior and therapeutic care of unfortunate events.
