Greek culture in the bolivian literature: Franz Tamayo and Gregorio Reynolds
Summary:
Franz Tamayo (1879-1956) and Gregorio Reynolds (1882-1948) are both outstanding modernist poets of Bolivian letters. Their work is characterized by the combination of national themes and themes of the classical Greek world. This thesis examines the presence of Greek culture in both poets’ work. Themes, topics, characters, images and similes inspired by Greek mythology and literature are studied, marking similarities and differences, in order to reveal the originality of their artistic creation. The purpose of this work is to present the universal influence of Greek literature and, at the same time, to delve into the study of the Bolivian Modernism, characterized by an effort to escape from reality and refuge in idealized past worlds. The Greek world is for both poets an ideal fictional place according to the modernist principles and their personal affection. Through a descriptive and comparative analysis of their works, it is shown, based on representative fragments, that both Tamayo and Reynolds go to the Greek world in order to escape from the sad Bolivian reality due to the loss of the maritime coast and the bad economic consequences of the international wars. Tamayo idealizes Bolivia’s glorious past, and Reynolds praises the Bolivian nature, elevating it to the same level as the Greek mythology nature that reflects harmony, serenity, and balance.
