Preanaesthetic evaluation of thoracic surgeries
Summary:
Background: Preoperative evaluation of patients that undergo thoracic surgery is a complicated procedure, given that most of these patients have pulmonary pathologies, are patients with malignancies and also have comorbidities. Both pulmonary and cardiovascular complications are frequently reported in this category of patients, thus their pre-operative evaluation is critical in the effectiveness of the procedure and the overall length of hospitalization.
Aim: The aim of the current thesis is to summarize the widely accepted techniques of pre-anesthetic evaluation in thoracic surgery, the differences and their interpretation, and to which extend they are applicable in the clinical setting.
Materials and Methods: A literature search was conducted in the databases PubMed, Cohraine, CINAHL and EmBASE using the following keywords: “Preoperative Evaluation”, “Perioperative Care”, “Thoracic Surgery”, “Lung Surgery”, “Guidelines”, “Risk factors”.
Results: Preanesthetic evaluation of the patients should be based in three basic parameters: the mechanical function of the lungs, the function of pulmonary parenchyma and the cardiopulmonary capacity of the patient. In cases where the patients have coronary artery disease or malignancies the evaluation procedure is more complicated, due to the increased risk.
