Summary:
Greece is becoming an attractive destination for international film productions. This is depicted in numbers: in 2021, the foreign films shot in the country where multiple in comparison to the films shot in any previous year. In their international campaigns, national film agencies describe Greece as a large and diverse film set. But how is this set actually being exploited by the international directors? In the light of Orientalism and Balkanism, two theories which form the context in which the Western world approaches the cultural Other, this paper attempts to shed some light on the images of exoticism as well as on the consolidated patterns of prejudice that can be detected in films shot in Greece.
