The economic dimensions of festivals in Greece: A case study in Vari Attikis
Summary:
This study focuses on the economic dimensions of culture, a dynamic sector as well as a widely developed subject over the last decades, especially as regards the creative industry. Culture has been producing great economic activity with significant impact on production processes, generating wealth and economic growth. In this context, the festival—today and in the past— apart from its religious, cultural, and social characteristics and dimensions, represents a central economic phenomenon in the life of the community, including a basic tool or means that enables local development. This study investigates the economic dimensions of festivals in Greece, along with their importance during the economic crisis. This is done through a case study, namely the festival in Vari Attica, which takes place on the occasion of the celebration of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (November 21). As regards the methodology, the ethnographic method and fieldwork were used for the collection of the data. Interviews were conducted (semi-structured interviews) along with participatory observation. The analysis of the data confirms that despite the current economic crisis, which has mainly affected the profits of street vendors, the festival remains an important social and economic activity for the local community. It stimulates the local economy to a great extent as many professionals and stakeholders are directly or indirectly involved.
