"Music For Peace" -Bicommunal Musical Activities as a Way of Conflict Resolution in Cyprus
Summary:
In this paper, I explore the role of music as a means of reconciliation and conflict resolution. More specifically in the examples of "musical coexistence" between the Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot communities in Cyprus today. The research methodology is mainly bibliographic, starting with a brief historical overview of the relationship between the two communities and presenting examples of a common musical tradition between them. Then, ethnographic examples from other countries are given, where music is used in similar ways, as a means of conflict resolution. In the last part of the paper, a greater depth is given in the bicommunal musical initiatives of Cyprus through bibliographic sources as well as short excerpts from two interviews.
