The Radio as a contemporary entertainment medium

The present thesis, The Radio as Contemporary Entertainment Medium, attempts to present the cultural substance of athenian FM radio stations and the quality of Elliniki Radiofonia Teleorasi- ERT(Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation) example, in contrast to private stations.
The survey for this project includes interviews with four radio broadcasters˗ working for the public service medium of ERT˗, and analysis of older broadcasts archives. The interviews focused on the nature of the public service media and their broadcast production methods in extent.
The main corpus of this thesis consist of three chapters. First a historical throwback from electromagnetic field theories and the invention of the medium, through World War II. Second chapter investigates computerized playlist as mass culture product and presents some of the radio producer’s music programming guidelines. Chapter three analyzes the principles of radio documentary and radio drama feature programs. Conclusion chapter also gives further information about ERT’s public character.
This project comes with audio example references from interviews and archives.
