World musics in the primary education: Perceptions, possibilities, limitations of the music teacher
Summary:
The present dissertation researches teaching "world music" in primary education. A qualitative search is conducted to examine six teachers' perceptions, potential, and limitations, emphasizing the teaching method mostly. The dissertation follows the ethnomusicological – anthropological approach, focusing on the five phenomenological models and how world music participants experience it (what they think and do). The main theme of the thesis consists of two parts. The first part involves theory and methodology. The theoretical framework provides a literature review of critical issues that mainly concern world music, such as perceptions, benefits, ways of teaching, and work materials. The methodology presents the process of conducting my research, as well as the problems and difficulties that I encountered. The second part presents material I collected from interviews per teacher. The presentation is based on the chronological order of events. Simultaneously the material is being analyzed and interpreted. The final chapter refers to the most important conclusions and suggests future research in the field. The appendix includes the indicative questionnaire I had prepared for the interviews and various web pages, e-books, and papers, which the teachers mentioned.
