Vaginal microbiota and recurrent miscarriages
Summary:
Recurrent pregnancy loss, even though they complicate 1-3% of couples of reproductive age, have significant consequences in their psychology and daily activities. Diagnosis and management of recurrent miscarriages depend on the identification and treatment of possible causes including chronic inflammation of the endometrium. Recent studies revealed the important role of normal flora in maintaining homeostasis of the human body and the mechanisms through which they affect its function. Despite traditional teaching, the endometrial cavity is not sterile. Development of new molecular techniques confirmed the presence of a plethora of bacteria that consist the normal microbiome. The current study is a literature review of the relation between recurrent miscarriages and vaginal microbiota.
