Translated title:
Theatrical Representations and Collective Memory. Theatrical biography, the example of Eleni Papadakis
Summary:
This paper examines the life of the actress Eleni Papadakis, as it is presented in two contemporary plays: "For Eleni", written by Manos Karatzogiannis, which was staged in Athens in 2016 under his direction, and "I, Eleni Papadakis", written by Irene Maradei, which was staged in 2022 in Cyprus, directed by Andreas Telemachos.
Eleni Papadaki, became famous during the interwar period and reached the peak of her career while she was working at the National Theatre. She was assassinated in Athens in 1944 as a collaborator of the Germans, with the result that her name and reputation carry the memory of the Decemberists, while at the same time she raises political confrontations even today. This paper presents the two aforementioned plays and at the same time examines how the collective memory of the civil war affects in nowadays and how social conditions create terms for reconciliation with the trauma of the civil war as well as for vindication of the personality of Eleni Papadakis.
