Summary:
This study focuses on a very critical period for the Greek economy and the world, in the decade of the Greek economic crisis 2009-2017. Its effects on the Greek economy and society were undoubtedly significant. In this study, an attempt will be made to investigate whether the Greek companies affected by the recession manipulated their financial result. It will also analyze the methods and techniques for manipulating the financial result, the incentives that lead companies to engage in earnings management, the models for measuring the manipulation of the result and will present the different approaches to the existence of manipulation of the result during an economic crisis. In the last part of the study, one of the models for measuring the earnings management is selected, the Jones model, and drawing data from a sample of 123 companies, we examine whether the companies in the period 2009-2017 manipulated their financial result. By applying the methodology, the existence of manipulation was found in the period under review, and more specifically, it was found that the companies manipulated their results downwards
