The folk clarinet in Evros, Greece. The case study of Christos Kanakidis (Zahardellas) 1920-2014

Thrace, as it is known, has always been a hub of culture and it still hosts rich cultural traditions even today. From the 20th century several musical styles and expressions were fermented and formed, which constitute the current heterogeneous identity of the place.
At the beginning of the 20th century, significant socio-political changes took place which, in their turn, affected culture itself. Thus, through the dissemination and eventually the spread of the new "delicate" instruments, especially the folk clarinet, around the area now called Northern Evros, many organological and interpretative changes occurred within the tradition of the place.
Therefore, based on the case study of the folk organist Christos Kanakidis (Zahardellas), which is the main focus of this paper, a thorough analysis of the Hebridean school of Clarinet is made. Kanakidis was a pioneer of his generation in the region, essentially contributing to the consolidation of the local school of interpretation of the instrument, which became synonymous with the Thracian Clarinet in the Pan-Hellenic world.
