Summary:
This paper deals with the theme of birds as they are presented and speak in the work of G. Ioannou “Our folk songs”, a poetic anthology released in a special edition with the newspaper “To Vima”. The unique criterion of selection for the three hundred and eighty five folk songs has been their poetic value . The folk song, born of the anonymous folk poet, is a living testimony of the oral folk tradition, expressing through its lyrics and music, the longings, dreams, sufferings and woes of the long-suffering Greek soul, which “have no end". His source of inspiration is the life of rural people, inextricably linked to nature and its elements. There is no fairy-tale, heroic, historical point, there is no human moment of joy or sorrow, in which nature is not involved, not as a mere scene of action, but personified, participating in human affairs. And the birds, symbols of human characteristics and values, personified heroes, mediating messengers, observers and helpers, supporters and judges, acquire a “humanspeech ” with an active and decisive role in the course of the human life of ordinary people, proving that they hold on the moral value scale of non-human beings, the highest position.
