Study of the role of neuroestrogens in female and male rats
Summary:
Neuropsychiatric disorders, and more specifically depressive disorder, are one of the most important health problems in modern societies worldwide. Until today, the pathophysiology of depression has not been fully elucidated and it appears that the factors causing depressive symptoms vary. These include genetic, molecular, and biochemical as well as environmental factors and stimuli, and theories surrounding this mechanism are constantly developing. It appears that significantly higher rates of depressive symptoms are observed in women, compared to the male sex. At the same time, women face many sex-related mood disorders, including postpartum depression and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. The complexity of the etiology of depression causes a significant problem in finding a successful and effective therapeutic approach for all patients. Antidepressant drugs have relatively limited efficacy and appear to have a delayed response in a large proportion of patients. This thesis focuses on reviewing how neuroestrogens affect the onset of depression, making it partially sex-dependent using examples of behavioral studies in female and male rats. Finally, it aims to present clinical studies that have been conducted using common antidepressants to confirm the different response between sexes.
