The moral depiction of Animals in Greek prose writing of the 19th century, with an emphasis on Alexander Papadiamantis's work
Summary:
The present master’s dissertation discusses the position of animals both in relation to philosophy as well as greek literature, with special emphasis upon the 19th century. In particular, there is an attempt to reflect people’s attitude towards animals from a moral angle. The various ways in which the world of animals has been treated , as they have been detected in the field of Literature, may derive from different viewpoints about the living beings of the planet that are presented and developed by the corresponding societies. Besides, within this context, it is evident at the same time that throughout the ages there has been a number of different ideas and approaches even in the field of philosophy, about whether and to which extent animals can possibly be equal to people and simultaneously if they can be considered to have rights. Furthermore, current trends are related to a web of ideas that may have been presented by various philosophers of the past. Immanuel Kant , Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill are representative philosophers of the 19th century ,whose beliefs concerning the moral attitude towards non-human animals are widely known. Through the relevant analysis, one can also realise that the ways in which the world of animals is treated range from the rejection of animal rights to the full acceptance and respect of them. At the same time , the particular dissertation, except for the references to the philosophers mentioned above, also aims to “detect” a series of beliefs with regard to the place of animals, supported by specific Greek authors of the 19th century, with special and detailed reference to characteristic short stories by the leading author of short fiction, Alexandros Papadiamantis.
