The sea as an agent in the diachronic development of the Minoan coastal sites of central and eastern Crete
Summary:
This Master’s dissertation discusses the question of the sea as an agent in the diachronic development of the Minoan coastal sites during the Prepalatial, Protopalatial and Neopalatial Periods. The presence of the sea has always been a particularly powerful factor in the formation and development of the cultures of the Aegean. Minoan Crete is no exception. Especially during the Palatial Periods, Crete was actively engaged in maritime activities and emerged as a main protagonist of the southern Aegean. This study focuses on the coasts of north-central, eastern and south-central Crete. A number of sites were selected, with a view to examine a variety of issues related to topography, geopolitics, economy, society and culture. The main purpose is to highlight, in the most interdisciplinary and multifaceted way, the influence that the sea had over time on the development of these sites and on the lives of their inhabitants.
