MINERAL RESOURCES, USES AND PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS, THEIR SIGNIFICANCE IN DAILY LIFE. A TEACHING APPROACH TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS THROUGH MUSEUM EXHIBITIONS.
Summary:
The modern educational field, especially with regard to formal education, has set particularly high standards regarding the content of the instructed courses as well as the size and quality of their content. In the information age and with the advent of the knowledge society, this content has become more complex, and at the same time more specialized. Consequently, it is necessary to utilize all possible teaching tools for a better understanding and assimilation of knowledge by the trainees. Museums, as informal learning spaces, have been recognized by the research and teaching community as particularly important in improving students' understanding and increasing their engagement with learning.
The present thesis, focusing on minerals as part of the subject matter of Chemistry in High School, presents the planning and implementation of a didactic intervention at the Museum of Mineralogy and Petrology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens involving an inquiry among the participating students focusing on the evaluation of the use of the museum as a learning space and the possibility that provides a better understanding of the theory of the course.
The results of the examination of the research data showed, on the one hand, a particularly positive reaction of the participants to the intervention in relation to its constructive effect in the context of the course, as well as a particularly positive evaluation of the utilization of the museum as an informal space for their further learning. It is also clear that the use of museums in general, but also the utilization of interactive interventions when visiting them, has particularly positive effect in terms of the knowledge quality which the students receive.
