Summary:
This Master’s dissertation discusses the issue of the construction of the Greek hipped roof from the Archaic to the Hellenistic period. An origin from the earliest apsidal buildings’ semi-conical roof is demonstrated through the examination of the relative models, while corresponding hipped roof models provide constructional and morphological analogies with the existing architecture. The determination of the hip rafters as distinctive components of its woodwork, in conjunction with the presence of an underlying vertical support on their junction to the ridge beam, constitutes the starting point for the identification of the form. Usable elements are the diagonal sockets on the entablature’s stone parts, the relevant tiles and the information provided by the floor plan and the literary sources.
This study is also concerned with the particular structural and functional features of the hipped roof, in combination with its actual cost and in comparison with the gable form. The consideration of a representative sample of structures yielded information about the technological achievements of the earliest hipped roofs and the possible building categories in which the form may correspond, while laying the groundwork for defining its identification criteria. At the same time, on the basis of these, the evaluation of the validity of the rendered hipped roofs was enabled, providing more reliable criteria for an issue about which we only have indirect evidence.
