Locating Russian religious art in Cyclades: The example of the island of Thera.
Summary:
The contacts between Russia and the Orthodox people of the Ottoman Empire, especially from the 16th century onwards, were an indisputable and integral part of the political and cultural history of both sides. The artifacts of Russian ecclesiastical art are tangible evidence of this relationship. The area of the Aegean Sea, where the present research is focused, is a small but pivotal part of the Greek area, where Russian religious art material is found. The Russian ecclesiastical material of the island of Thira, examined in this research, is a product dating from the 18th to the 20th century and is mostly manufactured or certified by Moscow guilds. This material amounts to large quantities and is divided into several categories. Thus, in order to present a comprehensive review of the present topic, in the first chapter we focus on the retrospective of the contacts and the type of relations that developed over the centuries between the island and Russia, in order to create the spatial and social context, a necessary condition so that to analyze and understand this specific topic. In the second chapter, follows the presentation of the material, from the most numerous category to the one with the fewest examples, and is grouped based on the similarities between the artifacts. In the next chapter, general observations and commentary on the material we recorded are highlighted. Then, an attempt is made to approximate the uptake of these objects by the inhabitants of the island, and finally, we arrive at some general conclusions and the evaluation of the research.
