Black figured and black painted pottery from Abdera: the case of an Ionian colony in the context of the Aegean Thrace
Summary:
In this dissertation are examined in detail 22 ‘black figured’ vases and sherds kept in the Archaeological Museum of Abdera and come from various locations of the ancient city of Abdera. Through their examination, I am to present a wider approach of archaic and early classical pottery, black figured or black painted, of this region that has never been an object of previous, systematic research. It is about fine pottery and especially about drinking and anointing vessels which either imported in Abdera from East Greece and Southern Aegean (Corinth, Attica) or produced locally. The majority of these vessels have been found at the cemeteries of the ancient city and date between the middle of the 7th and the middle of the 5th centuries B.C. The imported pottery and the local production of Abdera are examined based on the social and political changes of each period, while taking into consideration the networks of the merchants which developed within the boundaries of the Aegean Thrace.
My dissertation is divided in eight chapters. In the introduction, I present the historical and topographical development of ancient Abdera, while I include the historical context of the research and the goals of my dissertation. In the second chapter, I discuss black figured and black painted pottery from Abdera. In the third chapter, I refer to various categories of painted pottery, imported or locally produced, which have been found in many regions of the Aegean Thrace. Moreover, I focus on the imports of the Attic black figured vases, in order to explain the context in which the imports of related pottery took place in Abdera. In the fourth chapter, I present the conclusions, while in the fifth I attach the detailed Catalogue of vases from Abdera that I examined in person. The dissertation is completed with the Bibliography, Figures and Plates.
