Summary:
Nitrate pollution of surface and underground waters is quite important due to their widespread presence in surface and underground aquifers, on a global scale and the potential effects they can have on human health, animals and of course on the environment. Modern agricultural systems that began to be implemented from the middle of twentieth century, with monoculture and large-scale animal husbandry, were based on the extensive use of mineral fertilizers. This use led to a large increase in yield and production but also to groundwater pollution. The current thesis aims to record the problem of nitrate pollution in the river systems of the Pinios and the Evrotas in Thessaly and Peloponnesus in Greece but also focuses on the required comparison between the two river systems. This comparison was based on the amount of nitrate ions they have, depending on the hydrogeological conditions of each area. Pinios and Evrotas are burdened every year by waste from industries and also from agriculture uses. River deltas maintain important ecosystems with rich biodiversity and large biomass that unfortunately anthropogenic activities such as urbanization, tourism and agriculture can pose a threat to water quality. The rates of water pollution have been increasing over the decades and as a result it has raised an alarm in both global and domestic community, which is trying to establish laws and initiatives to deal with the problem.
