Internet addiction and psychological impact on adolescents
Summary:
The internet is an important field in the life of teenagers as through it they fulfill school, personal, social and psychological purposes. Extensive engagement of young people with the internet can lead to the development of addictive behaviors. Internet addiction is a serious form of psychopathology that occurs in the underage population worldwide causing adverse effects on their health, social life and schooling. The purpose of this scoping review is to study the psychological effects of internet addiction on adolescents. The data were collected in three databases, while the quality evaluation of the included studies was performed with the use of the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Literature search yielded 25 observational studies. The results of their evaluation revealed that their majority (17 out of 25 studies) were of medium quality. Concluded data were divided into four categories: depression and anxiety, suicide, emotional and behavioral effects, school bullying and cyberbullying. Adolescents who are addicted to the Internet have an increased risk of developing symptoms of anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation. Moreover, they show low self-esteem and emotional well-being. These adolescents become victims and exhibit externalization problems. The findings from the literature review address the negative impact of internet addiction on mental health, emotional development and behavior of adolescents. Adolescents experience psychological and social difficulties that need to be reduced in the context of therapeutic interventions.
