Summary:
This master’s thesis examines the fortifications of Thessaloniki, Delphi and Athens during the Early Byzantine period (4th-7th century). The primary aim of this study is to present the fortifications of the aforementioned sites as fully as possible, as well as to highlight the multidimensional functions they performed. The extensive analysis of the fortifications also aspires to find common and different elements and processes that took place in the cases under study. The examination of the fortifications is based on a laborious collection, study, presentation and review of the past and contemporary rich literature, by site in a respective chapter.
The thesis is structured in four chapters. In the first introductory part, the history of research, concerning the byzantine fortification art, is discussed. In the following three chapters, the three case studies are approached with a brief overview of their history and a thorough reference to their specific bibliography. In addition, the morphology of the walls is commented and in chapter four the functions that the walls performed other than the primary defensive one. Finally, the thesis concludes with a presentation of the observations and conclusions reached by the research, pointing out similar if not common processes carried out in the examined sites, while another function of the walls is proposed, that of antiquities custodians.
