Eating disorders and weight stress in adolescent female trampoline athletes
Summary:
The purpose of the present research was to examine the connection between eating disorders and body weight stress in teenage Trampoline female athletes. Thirty two trampoline athletes 11-18 years old participated in this research. To investigate the nutritional attitude of the athletes, we used the Nutritional Attitude Scale (EAT26) which consists of three factors: dieting avocation, bulimia and food avocation, ingestion control. The perceiving pressure about maintaining a low body weight was measured with the pressure about body weight in women’s sports questionnaire which consists of two factors: coach and sport pressure about body weight and pressure related to appearance and performance. Five athletes (14,2 %) had a score ≥ 20 in EAT26. Positive correlation between EAT26 score and the total body weight pressure (p= 0,002) was found, the coach and sport pressure (p= 0,024) and the pressure related to appearance and performance (p= 0,003). Furthermore, important individual correlations were found between bulimia and food avocation and the total rate of body weight pressure (p= 0,001). The results of the research confirm previous researches about relation between existing pressures in athletes about their body weight and the tendency of developing eating disorders. The relatively small percentage of athletes with score ≥ 20 in EAT26 is possibly interpreted by the sport’s body type requirements, which are not as strict and specific as in other gymnastics sports.
