THE RHETORIC OF AJAX SUICIDE IN SOPHOCLES' "AJAX "
Summary:
In this paper, I will describe the suicide of Ajax in its literary realization. Suicide in ancient Greek tragedy occurs three times in the tragic characters: in Sophocles' Ajax, in Sophocles' Antigone, and in Sophocles' Antigone, and in Euripides' Phoenixes, while the number of women in the tragedy who resort to suicide is clearly greater.
Suicide in antiquity will be researched through sources, as well as the impact it had on the societies of the time, as it is carried out in the texts of orators, historians and philosophers. Next, I will focus on the character of Ajax in Sophocles' tragedy of the same name, examining the speech he utters and the way in which it clearly or covertly foreshadows his action.
The figures of speech and the vocabulary chosen by Sophocles will be examined and the arguments that lead the hero to the choice of suicide will be evaluated.
