Original Title:
Η salsa ως αστική κουλτούρα: ζητήματα καταγωγής και διάδοσης
Translated title:
Salsa as an urban musical culture: origins and spreading
Summary:
The thesis is about Salsa as an urban culture: issues of origin and diffusion. The purpose of this analysis is to investigate and develop the phenomenon of the evolution of a genre of popular music and dance into a world-renowned artistic trend, which carries the culture and long-standing history of the peoples of Latin America.
In this work, 6 research questions are asked, to which answers are given based on foreign language bibliography of scholars and authors. In the first part, fundamental concepts surrounding music and Salsa are analyzed, while in the second part, the history of the musical and dance genre is developed from its beginnings until today.
The research helped to further appreciate Salsa's dual value to global musical culture, as it exemplifies the human propensity for artistic expression. Finally, it was a source of inspiration for future research in the field of Ethnomusicology, specifically regarding the human practice of music as a form of therapy and coping with adversity.
