Summary:
The issue of immigration is dominant in Greece and despite its long presence in the country, it has not yet been resolved and rehabilitated. This work is a master's thesis. Its purpose is to investigate the educational needs of refugees and immigrants, as well as the effect of labor market requirements on their educational needs with a view to integration into the labor market and by extension into Greek society. In the context of the general objectives of this work, the issues faced by the groups under study will be studied, in terms of their livelihood and the needs they express in order to feel equal members of society. Intensive objectives are to determine the learning characteristics that contribute to the formation of the trainees' identity, to study the conditions degree to which the programs offered meet the expectations and real needs of trainees. With these elements these programs will be able to identify with the real needs of trainees who are a group of heterogeneous and particular characteristics.
The present research is a qualitative research, where the semi-structured interview was used as a tool, while the results were processed using the method of content analysis. In the research participated twelve (12) people , who attend a voluntary Greek learning program at the Open School for Immigrants in Piraeus, while the researcher is a Primary Education teacher. The research was divided into five axes and the characteristics of refugees / immigrants were studied, the motivations for their participation in the educational process, the obstacles they encounter and which keep them away from it, the appropriate profile of an adult trainer for this population group and also their educational needs.
The research showed that this group, although they explicitly state that they would like to take part in educational programs, in practice they stay away from it despite their long-term stay in the country. However, the programs they choose to attend are the ones that benefit them most in finding a job. The present research contributes to studying in the future the deeper causes, which remove refugees/immigrants from the educational process and by extension from the labor market, thus making their equal social integration more difficult.
The most important findings of the research were as follows. Participants, although explicitly stating that they wish to take on educational programs, however, for various reasons analyzed in the results are far from them. It is noteworthy that the majority of refugees/immigrants have been staying in the Greek territory for several years and yet have not been assimilated to Greek society. Participants choose conscious educational programs that will be useful in the labor market. The present study helps to study the deeper causes in the future, which remove refugees / immigrants from the educational process and thus from the labor market, thus making their equal social integration more difficult.
