Summary:
This paper investigates the modernization and westernization of Turkish music through the work '12 preludes in Aksak rhythm for piano' by Ahmet Adnan Saygun. It consists of two parts: the summary of the most important political social reforms carried out in the 19th-20th centuries in the Ottoman Empire and the analytical approach of the 12 piano preludes. In the first part, there is a historical review of the political and social life of the Ottoman Empire during the 19th-20th centuries and all the political and cultural factors that led to the westernization of Turkish music are presented, as well as in what ways this took place. Also, the reforms that were carried out in music are mentioned, in which ways western music spread and how the first foundations of Turkish national music were laid. In addition, the life of the composer Ahmed Adnan Saygun is examined, focusing on his musical journey and the innovations of his compositional work.
The second part of the paper consists of the analytical approach of the 12 preludes in Aksak rhythm (a characteristic rhythmic feature of Turkish folk and art music) for piano, which aims to highlight the importance of Ahmet Adnan Saygun's work and the reasons why he is considered to be the most important representative of Turkish music of the 20th century.
