Maximos Peloponnesian and the West
Summary:
The subject of this doctoral thesis is the study and grammatological analysis of the antirrhetic doctrine of the hieromonk Maximos the Peloponnesian, pupil and archdeacon of the Patriarch of Alexandria of Egypt, Meletios Pegas. The anti-Latin doctrines of our author are mainly found in the "Manual against the schism of the papists", which is the eminently doctrinal of our author and negotiates the differences between Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism on the basis of the five differences of Ferrara-Florence Synod. Anti-Latin references are also found in the "Kyriakodromion" and in the "Interpretation in the Revelation of John". According to Maximos the Peloponnesian, the papal primacy is the cause of the schism of the Eastern and Western Churches. An important part of Maximos' objection to the primacy of the Pope is occupied by the interpretation of hagiographic passages related to this subject. About the subject of the objection to the addition to the Creed and the double procession of the Holy Spirit, he lists three reasons why the procession of the Holy Spirit from the Son is not valid: 1) it is not mentioned in the Holy Bible, 2) it is not synodically established, either through an Ecumenical Synod or through a local Synod, but not patristically either, and 3 ) so that two principles and two causes are not created in the Holy Trinity. The Peloponnesian scholar examines the issue of the use of unleavened or leavened bread in Divine Worship, from two sides, the historical one, i.e. why the Lord did not use unleavened bread in the Last Supper and essentially why that Supper does not constitute the Jewish Passover meal and theologically, because now the Church as "new Israel" should not use unleavened bread in its worship. Regarding the issue of the Epiclesis, Maximos states that the Transformation of the Holy Gifts is done with the consecrating wish of the priest and to confirm this position he invokes the liturgical tradition of the Church. The common place of Maximos' objection to the Latin doctrine on Purgatory and on the Blessedness of the Saints is the understanding of man as the unity of soul and body and their equality. How is it possible for the soul alone to enjoy the Heaven or to be punished in Purgatory without the body, since they sinned together? According to Maximos the Peloponnesian, it is better for the Orthodox to be enslaved to a Ottoman dynasty than to the Pope, where they would risk becoming heretics. Valuable sources for Maximos the Peloponnesian, in his attempt to reconstruct and negate the Latin innovations, are the Holy Bible and the Patristic tradition. It is obvious from the study of his writings that he is aware of patristic theology.
